CARMEN HERRERA

Untitled, 2012 Acrylic and pencil on paper 19% × 27 % in (48.9 × 69.1 cm) Provenance The artistLisson Gallery, MilanAcquired by the present owner from the above, 2013 Exhibitions Milan, Lisson Gallery, Carmen Herrera: Works on Paper 2010-2012, January 25-March 15, 2013, pp. 62, 64, illustrated Price 175 000€ Description The primary support is a piece of machine-made wove paper. The composition is executed in acrylic paint along with graphite pencil. The paper was first coated with a white preparatory layer. There is evidence that the artist used tape to mask off the straight lines that appear within the main composition. The very regular and slightly bumpy surface of all of the paint films suggests that, after the various shapes were masked off with tape, the paints were applied with rollers. Pinholes at the corners are presumably artifacts of the artist’s process. The work is signed and dated at bottom right in graphite pencil. Examination The work was inspected unframed using a high-powered LED light source, magnification, and UV illumination. Overall condition The artwork is generally in very good and physically stable condition. Condition notes The surfaces are clean, unblemished, and free of staining. The paper is bright and appears to show very little to no overall toning consistent with its age. The sheet is structurally sound with no indication of tears, losses, or earlier physical repair. The sheet is generally planar in keeping with what is normal for works on paper, especially those executed so broadly in wet mediums such as this one. There are occasional handling dents visible in the right half of the work when viewed with raking light along with some low deformations at the edges that are associated with the current hinges. The applied mediums are in very good and undisturbed condition. There is no indication of loss, weakness, or retouching. The colors are bright and saturated. The UV examination did not reveal anything further of note and provided additional visual support for the observations above.
